Find out if Bookkeeper Launch is the Is Bookkeeper Launch the best bookkeeping course for starting a business in this interview.
Is Bookkeeper Launch the best bookkeeping course for starting a business? Read on to see for yourself!

Are you at work more than you’re at home? When you add in your commute, does work use up most of your waking hours? Does it rob you of time with your family? If so, read on to see why Bookkeeper Launch might be the best bookkeeping course for starting a business that can give you back your time and help you build financial independence, too.

Jaime Rodriguez was an accountant working for a law firm. With his commute, he was spending 13 hours a day away from home. There wasn’t any time left for enjoying his life.

That’s when a colleague mentioned knowing someone who had a bookkeeping business.

Jaime knew he needed to learn more. His research on how to start a bookkeeping business led him to Bookkeeper Launch’s bookkeeping training program and eventually to building his own business – right from home, with no commute!

He eventually began coaching for BL, helping other students learn bookkeeping from home as he had, and, in a turn of events he never expected when he started, Jaime became the CEO of Bookkeepers.com and bought the company from founder Ben Robinson in 2025.

While his story is unique, Jaime says there are many bookkeeping success stories among Bookkeeper Launch’s students (you can read some of the Bookkeeper Launch success stories here).

This all happened because Jaime saw something missing in his life and decided to take a chance.

Today, I’m sharing my chat with this brand-new dad as we talk about how Bookkeeper Launch changed his life – and could change yours, too.

So, if you’re thinking, “I want a flexible job I can do from home with kids” (and if you’re here, you probably are!), this might be just the right read for you.

When I started the course, I didn't think I'd be a coach, a teacher, a mentor, whatever you want to call me. I didn't think that. I thought I would buy this course, I would start a bookkeeping business, and I would get my freedom back.

And I got that and more. I never thought that it would be much more than just a course that I bought. It's been way more fulfilling to be able to help thousands and thousands of people do it.
– Jaime Rodriguez, CEO and owner of Bookkeepers.com

Welcome, Jaime!

Jaime Rodriguez, CEO and owner of Bookkeeper Launch.

Background and Leadership Journey

What did you do before you took on the CEO role at BL?

I have an accounting degree. I started as a bookkeeper for a furniture store for a couple of years, and then I decided I hated inventory. And so I didn't want to work there anymore.

I got a job working as the in-house accountant for a law firm in the Houston area. And then about two years into that, I realized my commute was pretty awful. I had no life because of the commute. I was gone from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. It was just no way to live.

A coworker said, “Hey, I know somebody who started a bookkeeping business. I bet you could do it.  You're doing everything for us already.”

I didn't even know that was a thing; I thought I had to be a bookkeeper for just one company. I didn't know what it was like to be a bookkeeper for multiple companies;  I couldn't even fathom it.

But she planted that seed, and I said, “Well, if somebody's doing that, then I'm sure there's more than one person doing this.” I literally Googled, “How do I start a bookkeeping business?”

I found Bookkeeper Launch and Ben Robinson, the founder, liked all his videos, and I said, “Hey, well, let's give this a shot. This seems good. This seems legitimate.” And I went through the course.

What convinced you to choose Bookkeeper Launch to learn how to start your bookkeeper business?

I did look at a few others, and I just resonated with what Bookkeeper Launch had. Bookkeeper Launch teaches the systems, and they don't just teach you how to be a bookkeeper.  They teach how to be a business owner.

And I think one of the things that I really resonate with in our message, and that has remained part of our message today, is that bookkeeping is hard. It's not for everyone. And anybody who tells you it's easy, I think, does a disservice to this industry.

I thought, okay, that's the whole reason I got into accounting, was because I knew it was hard. People hate it. And so when I was in college, I said, I want to go into something that's high in demand and that most people hate to do. And that was how I landed in accounting.

That message resonated with me when I looked at different courses. I knew that bookkeeping and accounting were more than just learning QuickBooks.

I like that Bookkeeper Launch really focused on the skill aspect of bookkeeping and being a business owner, and being a business owner is half the battle. And Bookkeeper Launch focuses just as much on the systems and the marketing as they do with the bookkeeping itself.

What is your Big Why for buying Bookkeepers.com and becoming its new CEO?

Once my bookkeeping business was going, not only did I get my time back, I also had time to be a little more flexible with my company because I wasn't on a 13-hour work schedule like I was before.

I have a background in soccer. I love soccer.  So I actually started working as a soccer coach at a high school here in the Houston area. I was hardly getting paid anything for it. If I really did the math, I was probably paid less than minimum wage if I really looked at the hours.

But what I loved about it was being able to just see the light-bulb moments with the kids and just be a coach for them. That was fulfilling for me. It was a way for me to be able to give back. I credit that job.

It wasn't really a job that I was using to provide for myself. But I credit that with the spark that told me that, while I like the bookkeeping and I love the accounting, what I really, really love is being able to teach, to be able to give back, and see those light bulb moments.

During that time, Ben Robinson asked if I wanted to be on the BL support team, and I said, “Yeah, I could do that.”

So that really aligned with me because I was able to give back to a community that gave so much to me – that gave me freedom.  But it also fulfilled me being able to help others build something even bigger than what I've built. I love that part of it.

And then a few years passed.  I started doing coaching calls for the company as well. I don't know if I was being intentionally pushed into this position, but I slowly became the face of the company. When you bought Bookkeeper Launch, I was the person who was teaching it.

And so, in 2024, I think, is when I got appointed as CEO.  It felt like a seamless transition because I thought, “Hey, I've been doing this; now I just have the title.”

And then last year, 2025, is when I actually purchased the business from Ben Robinson, the founder. And I haven't looked back. It's been amazing.

So I guess the why is that feeling that I got from working with support, working with students, that feeling of being able to give back to the community that gave me so much, and seeing people grow businesses and excel and take those businesses to places that I couldn't even imagine.

It just naturally happened. I was afraid. It started with the coaching –  joining the support team. I was a little afraid. If I messed up somebody's books, at least it's my fault. It's my own business. But being on support, I just worried, “What if I steer somebody the wrong way and they mess up somebody's books and it all kind of points back to me?”

There's always that fear, right? But I thought, “You know what? I started this business knowing that there is always a potential for failure and there's always that fear.”  And I said, “Well, let's do this anyway.”

So, I would say I was just a normal person who ended up in this role I didn't think I'd get.

Bookkeeper Launch prepares you to start a bookkeeping business that earns money.
Bookkeeper Launch prepares you to start a bookkeeping business that earns money while helping them save theirs – a real win/win!

What is your favorite part of what you do?

Gosh. I'm going to sound like a broken record here. My favorite part is being able to just see people's faces light up when they understand something. That, or when somebody says, “I got my first client.” That's amazing.

I still host a coaching call every week, and it's my favorite call because everybody who has joined Bookkeeper Launch Premiere gets that coaching call with me on Thursdays. And what's really cool about it is I got to see these students when they first joined Bookkeeper Launch, where we talk about some of the wins they had for the week. And their win might be, “I finished the transactions unit. I finished this unit, that unit,” or what have you.

And those wins slowly start to transform into “I got my first client. I got my second client. Hey, I need to hire somebody; my business has gotten so big.”

It's one of those things that's bittersweet when they stop showing up to those coaching calls because they don't need those training wheels. They don't need somebody to be there with them.

Or they've gotten so busy that they're like, ” I don't have time to join that call anymore.”

It's bittersweet. Love that they've grown their business so much that they can do that. But it's bitter because I do miss seeing the students. And it's funny because you see almost a cohort of students that kind of go through and they phase out, and then we get a new influx of them, and it happens throughout the years.

How has Bookkeeper Launch changed your life?

Well, so I mentioned freedom and flexibility, and I was in my early 20s when I started my bookkeeping business. But I was always thinking ahead. I knew that once I got married, once I had kids, there's no way that I can actually have a family and have a job that needs me that much. So I was always thinking ahead.

My wife and I have been together for 12 years now. So she has seen me go through multiple jobs and start the business and start this Bookkeepers.com role now. She's been with me through all of that, and now, having the baby, I can't even imagine life going into an office and being an employee. I can't imagine that anymore.

It’s like I put everything into this, but I’m not dictated by it.

How many hours do you work in an average week?

I have my own bookkeeping business, and I’m the CEO of Bookkeepers.com. And now I’m a dad. That's three jobs. And a husband. That's my fourth job.

So on my bookkeeping business, I work very little, thankfully. And when I started working for Bookkeepers.com, it was like staring down a barrel and saying, “ All right, I have to figure this out. I have to systematize my bookkeeping business. Either hire somebody or automate a lot of it.” There's been kind of a mixture of both.

And so hour-wise on my bookkeeping business, I'd say less than five hours a week. Which is amazing for me.

Then for Bookkeepers.com,  I never stop. But it's like it's my baby now.  I do what I would consider work, about 50 hours a week.  But my favorite time is when I'm sitting on the couch, the TV's on, and I'm doing research. Like, for example, we're going to be at a conference later this year. I'm looking at different design ideas, ways to sell our products at the conference, things like that. So, it's hard to quantify that because I enjoy that part so much that I almost never turn off my brain from work.

Have you considered dropping your bookkeeping business since you became CEO of Bookkeeper Launch?

Oh gosh, I think about it almost every time. I'll tell you, Robin, one of the reasons I got into business, the first one, selfishly,  was for freedom and flexibility. I have no problem admitting that.

The second was that I really wanted to create a business where I could not only provide freedom and flexibility for myself, but also provide that for other people – employees, contractors, whoever's working for me. I think what keeps that business going is that there are people behind it, behind the scenes, who are working, and it's providing jobs.

Selfishly, if nobody else was involved, I probably would shut it down and focus 100% on Boookkeepers.com.

Vision For The Future

What do you want Bookkeeper Launch to offer students moving forward?

One of the goals that Ben had was to build an army of 25,000 good bookkeepers. That mission is still in place. We want to build an army of 25,000 21st-century bookkeepers who are not just bookkeepers; they're bookkeeping business owners. It's a big difference.

 Ultimately, that's the goal.

And we've created an association, the Digital Bookkeeper Association. That's our way of giving back to the community. We really want to be game changers in the industry. In an industry that's hardly regulated, we want some regulation, and I just want to be a part of that happening.

What one thing would you change about virtual bookkeeping if you could?

So, there have been a lot of changes since I took over. You know, when I think of something that I could change, it is to have something stable to teach on. In this case, we're teaching in QuickBooks. QuickBooks updates so often, and it makes it difficult for students.

We have tried to minimize the changes by adding an extension where, if QuickBooks changes something, we have a way that you can keep it the way it was before. We're trying to minimize that disruption, but it's not going to be gone, and we can't ever completely get rid of it.

So if there's anything I would change about the course, and I guess just the industry in general, is how often this software is updated. For somebody learning a new skill, that can be very difficult.

And I think if students aren't in the industry before joining Bookkeeper Launch, they may not realize how fast QuickBooks can update, and what something may look like today is different than the example they see.  It can change very, very fast.

For example, QuickBooks made a huge change in October 2025. Our lessons were essentially up to date up to then, and students in October would look at that and say,  “This is ancient.  You guys haven't re-recorded.”  And I'm like, “Well, it's not that old. QuickBooks literally just rolled this out this week.” And that's why we're re-recording for 2026 right now. In fact, I was re-recording this morning.

Have you added AI to Bookkeeper Launch in any way?

We have. So, we actually have an AI bookkeeping membership. The reason it's separate is because we are charged for every usage of it. So there’s a fee to join the membership to get access.

It's our own, but we've created agents within OpenAI, and so we get charged for every usage of AI within our agents on the AI platform we use OpenAI for.

Aside from our separate AI course, we also have AI tools that our students can use.

Bookkeeping as a Career for Parents

I was in my early 20s when I started my bookkeeping business. But I was always thinking ahead. I knew that once I got married, once I had kids, there's no way that I can actually have a family and have a job that needs me that much. – Jaime Rodriguez, CEO and owner of Bookkeepers.com

Is virtual bookkeeping a good work‑from‑home job for parents?

Absolutely. I think if people are stuck, if they ever feel like I felt, being out of the house working for 13 hours, this could potentially be the answer for them.

So, if you are a parent and you're already working full-time, this can be kind of a side hustle. Once books are clean, it’s simple and predictable. You’re doing daily or weekly categorizing of transactions, reconciling at month‑end, and reviewing financials with clients.

We attract a lot of people that want to just make a little extra cash, have a side hustle.

They still have their jobs, and they do the bookkeeping after hours.  With bookkeeping, you really can systematize it so much that you're not working long hours. If you're just wanting to make a little extra, one client can bring you about $500 a month.

That's about the average. If that's all you want, you have one client. You can do that in less than five hours a month. So, very, very doable.

I will say we have a lot of students that do that, come into the course as this being a side hustle, a little bit of extra cash. And it ends up being their primary source of income at some point.

Does this bookkeeping course teach parents how to scale their bookkeeping business as their kids get older?

Yes. One thing that we recommend is to constantly be marketing.

Even if you can't take a client, if you only have five hours a month and you say, “ I only have this time for one client. I can't deal with two clients.”

We always say to continue to market so that whenever you do have the time, you're able to scale if you'd like.

It's better to have the leads now and say no than to not market and then try to market when you do have time.

The best bookkeeping course for starting a business helps you go beyond the basics and build your business.
Use your advanced bookkeeping skills to turn a profit for your clients and yourself.

What makes BL’s bookkeeping education worth the investment for parents who want to build a lasting work-from-home career?

So, I think it's the coaching and all the different ways that you have support. Being a business owner is difficult. Learning a new skill is very difficult.

And I want all of our students to feel like they're not alone. That we're there every step of the way. Whether they're learning a new skill on day one or five years from now, they have their 300th client that finally stumped them, and they need support for that 300th client; we're there for that.

So whatever the problem is, whatever the question is, whatever the doubt is, we're there to help them. We offer support in so many different ways, including the live coaching calls and the coaching call with me every week in the Premier program.

If you just get Bookkeeper Launch Pro, you get two coaching calls weekly. And then on top of that, once a month, you get a webinar which we call Legal Lunch. I think we've talked a little bit about Legal Lunch in the past.

And then, as far as outside of a live call, you do have access to our email. That's unlimited support that doesn't run out. You can ask us questions on day one about the course, or you can ask us a question about a client five years from now.

The course can be overwhelming for new students when they go through it. We try to break it down as much as we can. But it's hard to have a course that gives you everything and not look a little scary, right? So there is that part of it.

If I had to summarize what the job of a bookkeeper is, you categorize transactions. You reconcile bank accounts. Then you give a report to your client, and you translate that report into language they can understand.

And I think that's where the person with no bookkeeping experience really excels because they're just watching the video and they say, “Well, this is just the norm.”

While somebody like me, who kind of came up in the accounting industry, that's not the norm. It's a little crazy to be advising your clients and going over their financials like that. But when somebody comes into this industry not knowing the standard for a bookkeeper right now, you're going above and beyond by doing this.

With Bookkeeper Launch‘s 21st century training, you'll be prepared to interpret information and advise your clients.

Training, TIme Commitment, & ROI

How long does it take to learn bookkeeping with BL and be ready to take on clients?

So, the course is laid out in 12 weeks; 90 days. And it's self-paced. So, if it takes you longer than that, it's not a problem.

But if you want to finish in the scheduled time that we have allotted for students, I recommend spending two to three hours a week going through the course. And one thing I recommend is going through the course exactly as it's laid out. This kind of goes back to the last question about marketing.

Very early on in week two, we recommend and teach you how to market yourself. Now, as someone learning bookkeeping for the first time, it might sound ridiculous to say, “I just started this course. I don't even know bookkeeping yet, and here I am, week two of this, and I'm telling people that I'm starting a bookkeeping business.” That sounds kind of crazy.

The reason for that is that all of this takes time to build. If you wait until month three, when you finish the course, to start marketing, well, you're just now starting the foundation of marketing on month three when you should have been doing that two weeks into this business.

Students will ask, “How can I market myself two weeks into this?” And I tell them the worst-case scenario is that you get a client. That's your worst-case scenario. Somebody's saying, “Oh, you have a bookkeeping business. Cool. I need a bookkeeper.” That's the worst-case scenario. That's pretty good. That's a pretty good worst case, right? Like, that's the worst that can happen.

And you can always say, “Hey, I'm finishing a certification. I can take on a new client in two to three months.” Or refer them to another student. You can always do that as well.

Do the two or three hours a week include the time spent attempting to do the work, or just the videos and lessons?

Both, because we have lessons where you just watch the video. The way that we teach is basically a three-fold plan.

In the first set of videos in each unit, you're just watching the instructor, whether that's me or somebody else. You're just watching them do the work, maybe take notes, but that's about it. We don't expect you to understand what's happening in that first go around.

The second time, we do the exact same thing, but then you do it with us. Now, when I say click here, you click here, that kind of thing.

And then in the third part, you do it by yourself, and then we give you an answer sheet, and you compare it. That's where it can take you longer.

Now, the first part, where you watch, and the second part, where you do it with me, you should be able to watch and finish at the same rate that I am.  The other part, where you're on your own, I expect you to take a little bit longer on that part.

Our course is laid out in three months. When I took it, I finished it in closer to four months. If I don't understand something, I have to pause it, go back to it, or sometimes I watch a whole video, and I'm like, “What did I just watch? I got sidetracked. Let me watch that again.”

All you really need is Bookkeeper Launch, the internet, and a computer.
All you really need is Bookkeeper Launch, the internet, and a computer.

How long does a Bookkeeper Launch graduate typically need to earn back their investment?

So, honestly, one client can do it, right? We recommend that you charge clients $300 to $400 a month. And that's a very small client. I would say in today's market, it's probably more about $500 a month for a very small client. And if you're charging that on a monthly basis,  it takes you four months to make back your investment, give or take.  More or less.

Now, how long it takes you to get that client is going to depend on how fast you start marketing. And that's kind of why you need to follow the course exactly as it's laid out.

Even if it sounds crazy to start doing that so early. But you can make your money back within about four months.

And then after that, it's all income.

I started my business. Three months in, I got my first client. So that was March 2017. By around June or July, I got my first client. By December, I had already made my return on investment from that one client. It was freaking awesome. It was just amazing.  And within two years, I made six figures.

How much does it cost to start a bookkeeping business?

So, one of the things about bookkeeping that I love and why I chose this path is that there's so little startup cost, unless you don't have a computer. But most people have a computer these days. You need to have a computer, you need to have internet access, and that's essentially it.

Everything else is “nice to have.” It's nice to have a camera. It's nice to have two monitors.

It's nice to have a big desk and a dedicated office.

All of that is awesome, but it's just nice to have. I started with the same laptop that I was using in college. That's how I started my business. A very old laptop and a little shelf desk. It wasn't really a desk, just a little shelf and I was working on that.

That's all I had. I didn't spend a dime on anything else.

The software is free for bookkeepers. And we give you a ton of templates in Bookkeeper Launch, so that you don't have to go and buy them. There are other people selling courses where you can buy things a la carte. You can buy certain templates and checklists. But you get it all with Bookkeeper Launch.

So your only expense is essentially the course itself.

We do recommend that you get errors and omissions insurance, but that's not required until you get your first client. So,  that’s not an expense that you have to incur until you have money coming in.

And students, depending on their budget, will buy their domain and create their LLC. Obviously it depends on what state they live in how much that costs. Many students will do that within the course, even before they get a client. You don't need to do that. You can also wait for that if you want.

As long as you have a computer and internet, you can start today.

Becoming A Successful Bookkeeper

What is the most important thing you’d tell someone who asks, “What skills do I need to become a bookkeeper?”

I think you have to be flexible with change. The industry changes a lot. There's new software that is going to revolutionize how you do bookkeeping, and I'll use one as an example.

Double, formerly known as Keeper –  they are amazing. And they have a really good product. But three or four years ago, they were probably just a thought at that point. And they came in, and they really revolutionized the space.

QuickBooks has also changed a lot over the last year. They've implemented AI. I think, especially with AI now, you do have to be flexible with change.

If you're a bookkeeper who wants something to stay the same, you might not be in the right industry. It does change often because we're so reliant on software. It's the blessing and the curse of working digitally.

You get to work with software, and you work from anywhere because you're working with software.

The bad things are that software updates and it has glitches, and you have to deal with them.

What does a bookkeeper’s typical day (or week) look like?

You're probably categorizing transactions daily. That's after a set of books is already clean, right? You're just categorizing transactions, putting them into buckets, saying,  “This is an office supplies expense. This is utilities.”

And depending on how big a client it is, I like doing this maybe once a week. So you spend an hour clearing the bank feed.  At the end of the month, you reconcile. And then lastly, you go over those financials with your client.

So, as far as a parent doing it goes, it doesn't take more time because that's just the way they're trained to do it after they've sorted out the financial transactions, then they're just conveying that information to the clients.

How do you make sure your graduates have the knowledge they need to help their clients understand how to manage their business finances?

So, one of our goals is to create 21st-century bookkeepers.  And what that means is that they understand financials.

It's not enough for a bookkeeper to categorize transactions and reconcile bank accounts. Especially these days, a robot can do that. The real knowledge comes from understanding the financials and being able to interpret them.

We have an entire unit called Interpret and Advise. It's all about you understanding those financial statements. That's really where the money comes in as a bookkeeper: being able to understand financial statements and give your clients advice.

And that's what we want from our students; to be more than just a bookkeeper – to be a trusted adviser for those clients.

What advice can you give to people considering pursuing bookkeeping certification online?

So, I think the number one piece of advice is that if you're afraid, just do it anyway. Like that's the best piece of advice, whether it's bookkeeping or anything else, really. It's scary to start a business.

It's scary to start a new skill. But courses like Bookkeeper Launch – we offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. There are no questions asked.

So, I always like to encourage people. If there's even a glimpse of hope or a glimpse of thought that this could work for you, try it out for 30 days.

You literally have nothing to lose other than the time that you spend working on the course.

I want everybody to try it, and if it's not for them, it's not for them, right? And I want people to give it a shot because it has so much potential to change their lives.

So, my number one piece of advice is just to give it a shot, no matter how scary it is.

Jaime’s Five Practical Tips For New Bookkeepers

1. Don’t start with software… start with a messy set of books

Most people think they need to “learn QuickBooks” first. That’s backwards.

Bookkeeper Launch CEO's tips for new digital bookkeepers.

Go find a friend, family member, or small business owner whose books are a mess and offer to clean them up at a discount.

That experience will teach you:

  • what actually goes wrong
  • how transactions really flow
  • how to think like a bookkeeper

That’s where confidence comes from, not from having a QuickBooks certification.

2. Pick a niche before you feel ready

Everyone wants to “serve anyone” at the beginning. That slows you down. That doesn’t mean you can’t take on clients in a different niche, but you “specialize” in ONE.

Pick a niche early, even if it feels premature:

  • real estate investors
  • law firms
  • dentists

Why this matters:

  • You learn faster because patterns repeat
  • Your marketing becomes 10x easier
  • You sound like an expert sooner

You can always change later, but starting general keeps you stuck.

3. Your first clients won’t come from a website

People waste weeks building logos, websites, and branding.

Your first 3–5 clients will come from:

  • people you already know
  • referrals
  • conversations

Instead, do this:

  • Text 10 people you know and say:
“Do you know anyone who needs help with their bookkeeping?”

That one message will outperform a website 100 times over early on.

4. Charge a flat monthly price from day one

Most beginners try to charge hourly because it feels safer. It actually hurts you.

Hourly:

  • rewards inefficiency
  • creates awkward billing conversations
  • caps your income

Flat monthly:

  • is easier for clients to understand
  • lets you increase profit as you get faster
  • positions you like a professional, not a temp worker

5. Build your “client experience” before your client list

This is the one most people never think about.

Before you even have clients, decide:

  • How do you onboard them?
  • What emails do they get?
  • How do you communicate monthly?

Why this matters:

  • When you do get clients, you look established
  • You retain clients longer
  • You stand out immediately

Most bookkeepers lose clients not because of bad work… but because of a poor experience.

I want all of our students to feel like they're not alone. That we're there every step of the way. Whether they're learning a new skill on day one or five years from now, they have their 300th client that finally stumped them, and they need support for that 300th client; we're there for that.

So whatever the problem is, whatever the question is, whatever the doubt is, we're there to help them.Jaime Rodriguez, CEO and owner of Bookkeepers.com
