Hi, Emily!

Can you tell us about your life before you took Becoming a Proofreader with Knowadays?

I graduated from Binghamton University in New York with a degree in English Literature in 2007. After graduation, I taught elementary school in NYC while pursuing my master’s in education from Mercy College. In 2013, I started working as a preschool teacher and administrator in Hoboken, NJ.  

What motivated you to look for kid friendly jobs for moms? What was happening in your life at that time that led to that decision?

After my second child was born in 2018, I left teaching to be a stay-at-home-mom. I still taught Hebrew school and some enrichment classes on the weekends and during the holidays. I worked for a private Jewish preschool. However, during the pandemic, all enrichment classes were canceled.

 I started thinking about changing careers and flexible remote work. I knew several people who started working from home full time during the pandemic. The idea really appealed to me. However, I knew I’d have to leave teaching entirely to be able to do that. When I was in college, I tutored writing to international students. So I started thinking about proofreading and editing as a career, or even online writing tutoring. In the end, I decided to pursue proofreading and editing. 

Will you share with us why you chose Becoming a Proofreader as your path to your kid friendly jobs? What went into that decision?

Honestly, I just googled proofreading/editing courses and Knowadays came up! I signed up the next day after reading about the course and looking at reviews. What did/do you love most about the course, or Knowadays in general?

Is proofreading really a kid friendly job for moms? What have been the biggest changes for your family?

I’m still able to work and do school pickup, dropoff, playdates, activities, etc. for my four- and six-year-olds. The flexible work allowed me to continue being a “stay-at-home” mom. I didn't have to hire a nanny or pay for afterschool for my kids. Before my kids were in school, I would proofread and edit during their nap times, after they went to bed, or on weekends.

Now that they’re in school, I have a lot more flexibility with my hours. I’m able to do my tutor role, which includes answering our learners' queries and marking final assignments, while the kids are at school. I try to do my blog writing in the evenings, like while they’re at an activity (dance class, rock climbing, etc.). I work part time, so I’m able to drop them off and pick them up from school. 

What were the most challenging parts of the transition to freelancing, for you and your family?

I worked some nights and weekends when I first started freelancing for Proofed, since that was when more work was available. I also took pretty much every proofreading job that came up so that I could gain more experience. My family wasn’t really used to me not being available! Now the kids are at school full time. So I’m able to do most of my work during that time. My weekends have freed up again. I’m also not doing as much proofreading these days, as my focus has shifted to my Knowadays tutor role. 

How did you and your family deal with these challenges?

My husband and family picked up the slack with the kids and helped get them to activities. Now that I’ve gotten into more of a groove with my work, I think my work-life balance has really evened out.

So many ways! Additional income and work that allowed me to save money on childcare and be there for my kids are the biggest ones. I have the flexibility to take a day off if they’re sick or need to go the dentist, for example. And because I work from home, it’s easier for me to attend events at their school. I can also shift my schedule around to accommodate parent/teacher conferences and things like that. 

What are your favorite things about your freelancing life today?

I absolutely love working from home and getting to do work I enjoy. It hardly feels like work. I also like that I have the flexibility in my schedule to take days off for special events or to volunteer at my kids’ school. 

You’ve become a tutor and blog writer for Knowadays, and you also write and edit for their partner company, Proofed. How flexible and kid friendly is the work you do? Are you able to set your own hours? 

I usually work the same shifts every week for my tutor role at Knowadays so that our learners can book feedback or support calls with me in advance. However, I have the flexibility to vary my hours somewhat. I have total flexibility with my work with Proofed and my writing, and I only take on those sorts of jobs when I have the extra time and always outside of my tutor shift hours. 

Did you need further training to take on these roles?

I didn’t take any additional training to become a blog writer, but my work on business client teams at Proofed definitely helped me become more confident with my own marketing-type writing. I had the opportunity to proofread and edit all types of marketing copy for Proofed – blog posts, website content, etc., and I even quality controlled and reviewed the work of the other proofreaders on my team. So when I decided to write my own blog posts, I had a blueprint to follow and knew what most companies would be looking for. I became very familiar with the structure of blog articles and SEO techniques, like how and when to use keywords, which led to me writing marketing content for other companies. 

How likely is it for a new student to advance to the kind of roles you’ve taken on with Knowadays and Proofed? Is your situation common, rare, or somewhere in between?

I’m not sure how many freelancers currently work with Proofed, but I know it’s in the hundreds. I think Proofed is great because you can really fit the work around your own schedule. I definitely could take on more if I had the time, and I know some freelancers that are able to do it full time. But I think it really depends on you and your schedule. Everyone on our tutor team is a Knowadays graduate, so we’re all well-equipped to help people navigate the proofreading and editing world. Our distinction graduates go on to work with Proofed (the partner company of Knowadays) and many are successful at freelancing outside of Proofed as well.

There are slower periods and busier periods with Proofed. I always made a decent income, even if it wasn’t replacing the income of a full-time position. 

Can you tell us more about how students get work once they’ve graduated from Becoming a Proofreader?

After graduating with distinction from Becoming A Proofreader and Becoming An Editor, students are given the opportunity for a trial work period with Proofed. Work is on a freelance basis, and you can accept work whenever you have free time by checking Proofed’s dashboard for available work. If you “pass” the trial period, you’re considered a full-fledged freelancer and may have your word count increased and/or access to other types of work with Proofed’s various business clients.

All new freelancers have their work evaluated by Proofed’s reviewers, and they’re given a rating on their work. “Passing” the trial period means that your work has been mostly professional and highly rated by the reviewing team.

What do you love most about editing, tutoring, and/or writing?

I love helping learners – whether that’s answering a question over email or working with them one to one to improve their score on our final assessment. I also really enjoy writing posts for the blog; the research I do for my writing has really helped me develop as a professional and learn about a lot of different topics related to the industry, including SEO and the impact of AI.

What parts of your work are the most frustrating?

Working part time, I sometimes feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day to check everything off my to-do list!

What would you say to someone considering a career change to freelancing, or to someone considering the Becoming a Proofreader course?
